It is surprising how many distributors and direct sales people are reluctant to talk with friends about their business. I guess it’s understandable considering the high level of rejection one can get when using or even thinking about the old fashioned sales techniques that actually create rejection. However, by not talking with them about what you are now doing, it does mean they are missing out on a potential source of high quality business partners and customers. You owe it to them, at least they will have the relevant advice.
You never know what their thoughts: needs desires and problems are until you discus what you have to offer! The worst that can happen is they can say no, BUT if you do not let them know you are failing in self promotion! they might need what you have to offer and they’re missing out because they’re unaware you can provide it for them.
Solutions and Suggestions...
First, always keep in mind the first principle of Natural Selling… That your purpose, and the purpose of your business, is to help people solve their problems. The true essence of selling is discovering if people have the types of problems that your solutions are designed to solve. If they do, then you customize your presentation based on what they tell you. Remember this is a people business help them get what they want and you will be rewarded, for ever..
Next, before approaching friends, take time to prepare. “THINK” about everything you can about them especially their likes, dislikes, passions, frustrations and write it down, this will be a wonderful advantage and provide you as well as the person to whom you meet confidence and faith in what you are about to cover.
Reflect on the problems you might have heard them talk about, that your business opportunity might be able to solve. Things like health problems or tight finances, and how it’s affecting them.
Then you can open up a dialogue, start a conversation using a phrases like…
I was thinking about what you were saying the other week about what concerns you (problem) and it occurred to me that there might be a way you can turn that around if you’re interested in resolving it…. Usually there is a pause and a plea for more information.
Well before I talk about that, let me ask you a few questions to see if I heard you correctly and to make sure it could be the right solution for you.
This is where training is paramount because only the right questions will give you the right answers.

You know how you were talking the other day about (problem) and how (it was getting you down)? I’m curious… Is it something you want to resolve or something you’re prepared to live with it? This will determine the real desire of the person you are now with, it also means you will know what to do next.
When they say they would like to resolve it… you can say…
The reason I’m asking is that I have something that could take care of that for you… though before I talk about it, tell me more about what is happening and what you’ve already attempted to do about it if anything…
We all have Two Ears and One Mouth Listen Learn and then ask!!
All the above is not going to work unless you keep in mind the following…
- Respect the relationship that is already there. What’s more important? Your friendship or wanting them as a business partner?
- Hold back from jumping in with your solution.
If you adopt this approach, you eliminate the risk of upsetting people you know and I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how many people will have an interest in your products or business. Be the best you can be at all times and never give up.
Some people just grin and bear it while others smile and do it.
Ability gets you to the top and character keeps you there.
